A Geek by any other name: the Special Theory of Geekity

Editor’s Note, Stefano Nunes is a geekasm.net contributor and philosopher. In this article he tries to describe to us the theory of Geekity

A Geek by any other name: the Special Theory of Geekity

by Stefano Romero da Silva Nunes

IF
G(R,F,S) where the Geek function is a function of Random knowledge R, Fanatism F and Social group for one interest S

where the equation for GEEK is

G=(R*F)^(-S) (1)

We decompose R to find the definition of Random Knowledge:

R=k^s (2)

where k is the horizontal dimension of knowledge (i.e. how many facts you know about something) and s is the vertical dimension (the specificity, or depth of the knowledge).
We observe that the R term is modified by the specificity of the knowledge in a positive way, as

ðR/ðs=s’k^s (3)

Likewise, we obtain for Fanatism:

F= (p*d)^(e*t) (4) 0<e<1, 0<t<1

where e and t are money and time available(as shares of total), p is passion for the subject, and d is dedication. Passion being defined as a given constant ( a predisposition to like something), and d growing as the person’s preferences shift toward the subject in question.

We observe from (1) that:

ðG/ðS= -(S’)(R*F)^(-S) (5)

which means that the more the person’s social environment with regards to their particular interest grows, the less geeky they become. Furthermore, as things become known and popular, we can assume that S is a growing function.

It is important here to point out that only people in the immediate reach of the person constitute a social circle around a subject, as the internet has led to mass geekyness without withdrawing said geekyness from society. MMORPG,for example, although the geeky aspect is the fantasy world aspect, as the sole fact of going online to meet people as an avatar becomes increasingly popular with games such as Second Life; they thus become less geeky and more accepted.

The interaction between Random Knowledge and Fanatism

A person with lots of knowledge about something can just be someone very interested in something, or just experienced, doctors have lots of knowledge about random medicine, but are not necessarily fanatics of heart disease or get excited about the next headache symposium.
Likewise, you can be a fan without being a geek, one could have all of Michael jackson’s record and like his music without forcibly knowing the day he was born, or how many cds he sold for “bad”.

Thus a geek is someone who Knows a lot about something, has a passion for a subject and who has an interest for something that not a great many people share in their immediate surroundings.

There are RPG geeks, science geeks, Facebook geeks, general knowledge geeks (remember the specificity, general knowledge such as knowing the capital of Brunei can be considered specific), videogame geeks, and quite obviously economics geeks.

Further research is required in the macro field to determine whether one can define a single person with several geeky interests as a “geek” tout court, but we present here the Special Theory of Geekity.
